About the Project
Youth Serving Samoa (YSS) is a special project created through a grant awarded by the Administration for Native Americans. The YSS Project is a 6 month tsunami-relief grant project with a focus on youth-led service learning, and the project aims to educate the American Samoan children and teen population on disaster preparedness.
The project has 2 parts.
1) Students will design and implement clean up and beautification projects in 6 villages that were devastated by the 9/29/2010 tsunami
2) Students will develop and implement a youth-to-youth disaster preparedness campaign.

The Participants
The project includes 75 high school students from across the island and is led by 7 very dedicated Youth Leaders.
The Youth Leaders attended leadership workshops throughout October and November of 2010 before taking led by planning the Village Clean Up Projects and Youth-to-Youth Campaign.
The Youth Leaders took on an special role in November 2010 when they presented the project and their ideas to the village pulenu'u (majors). This was a rare occasion as youth do not usually interact with with village elders in such a way.

The aim of the Youth-to-Youth Campaign is to prepared the children and teens of American Samoa for natural disasters. 16 students came together to form the Campaign Team and designed a strategy to spread their message that included a logo, banners, flyers, newspaper ads, radio ads, video public service announcements, elementary school presentations.
