In a partnership between PiCED and the Department of Human and Social Services' I CARE program, students ages 5-13 receive an intensive writing experience at the PiCED Summer Writing Camp. The PiCED writing program teaches children from K5 through 8th grade the essential parts of the writing process while strengthening their grammar and vocabulary skills through the process of writing and telling stories through art. Below, Summer Writing Camp instructor Nometa Sene assists her students as they engage in the process of writing stories and perfecting their penmanship.

PiCED recruited high-achieving recent high school graduates like Tafuna HS Valedictorians Lourdes David and Grace Felise, to be summer interns at the PiCED Summer Writing Camp. The interns completed the Teach Me Writing training program and work in collaboration with PiCED staff on classroom management skills. Below, Lourdes David encourages a 6-year old to tell his story about Father's Day that he has written in pictures and organized through a Writing Rectangle, one of many tools being used to teach children how to develop good organizational writing skills.

Students ages 9-11 are seen below at the PiCED/DHSS Writing Summer Camp intensely engaged in the writing process and having fun writing stories. "Our children need help in developing good writing skills. We have a proven model for teaching good writing from kindergarten to 8th grade. The key is to provide them with a safe and positive learning environment where they feel uninhibited to speak their thoughts and share their imagination with each other. Our instructors are trained to be positive and to be encouraging towards the children. As we teach them the formula for organized writing, the children are also having fun," said Sandra King Young, Executive Director. "We could only take 30 students this summer due to lack of space and limited funding. We had to turn away a total of 65 parents who wanted to put their children in the Summer Writing Camp."

Let's Hear It For The Grads!
Graduation week is finally over, and we couldn't be more proud of all of the 2011 graduates. Some of the Valedictorians and Salutatorians who have participated in PiCED programs this past year, gathered at PiCED for an afternoon of pizza and laughs. Congratualtions on all your hardwork and dedication - it truly paid off! Thank you for letting PiCED be a part of your lives!
